Steps to perform CPR on an Infant (under the age of 1)

  1. Check consciousness - Flick foot or tap shoulder and shout “Are you OK?”. If there is no response, position the infant on his or her back on a hard, flat surface (supporting the neck and back)
  2. Call for Help - Ask someone to call 911. if you are alone give 2 minutes of care and then call 911
  3. 2 Rescue Breaths - Tilt the baby’s head back and lift the baby’s chin. Look, listen, and feel for any breathing. If the baby is NOT breathing give 2 small gentle breaths. Cover the baby's mouth and nose with your mouth. Each breath should be 1 second long. You should see the baby's chest rise gently with each breath.
  4. Compressions - Give 30 chest compressions at the rate of 100 per minute. Use two or three fingers in the center of the chest just below the nipples. Press down approximately one-third to one-half the depth of the chest.
  5. Repeat - Repeat with 2 breaths and 30 compressions.
  6. Continue giving breaths and compressions until baby responds (moves/coughs/cries) or help arrives.

Choking - Conscious Infant (under the age of 1)

  1. Determine if the infant can cry or cough. If not, proceed to next step.
  2. Give 5 back blows
  3. Give 5 chest thrusts
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 above until effective or the infant becomes unconscious. If the infant becomes unresponsive, perform CPR- if you see an object in the throat or mouth, remove it.
